Reading blogs such as my own and keeping tabs on twitter constitute great ways of keeping abreast of developments and expert commentary in the field of transmedia storytelling. Nonetheless, there’s something to be said for having access to a compiled book that provides additional substance, as well as something you can print or upload to an e-reader and take with you.
Assuming that you’ve read Frank Rose’s The Art of Immersion, and while you wait for Spreadable Media, as well as Andrea Phillips’ forthcoming creative-focused book, you should consider downloading One Year in Transmedia, uploaded last week by Simon Staffans. It’s a PDF compilation of Staffans’ thoughts on developing transmedia stories and formats, categorized into different sections (e.g. “Transmedia and the audience”).
One Year in Transmedia is a great read for anybody interested in developing stories or brands across multiple platforms, and it’s free to download under a creative commons license. There’s a really nice blend of the creative, business and practical. Perhaps best of all, each post (or “chapter”) is stamped with its original date of publication, allowing the reader to chart the evolution and development of Staffans’ ideas, and compare with their own.
